Against the Grain: the rarest answer wins

Name a sea: easy. Name one nobody else thinks of: that’s the game. In Against the Grain, a correct answer is worth more the fewer people have given it before you.

How to play Against the Grain

  1. Each question has a finite list of valid answers, and you have 30 seconds to find one.
  2. Type your answer and pick it when it appears: you never get to see the full list.
  3. Points depend on how often that answer has already been given, by anyone, in any match.
  4. In Blind mode answers stay hidden until the question ends; in Live mode they show up right away and one already given can’t be reused.
  5. There is a quick leaderboard after every question, and whoever has the most points at the end wins.

Frequently asked questions about Against the Grain

How is this different from a normal quiz?

In a quiz, what counts is knowing the answer. Here there are many correct answers and what counts is choosing one the others don’t think of: the most obvious answer is correct, but worth next to nothing.

Why does a correct answer sometimes not appear?

Valid answers are a list we prepared, and one may be missing. Try another name or the main word, for example “ionian” rather than “the sea of Ionia”. If you think one is missing, write to us.

Do I need the internet?

Yes, at least at the start of the match, even on one phone: the game has to download the statistics for the questions. In a room the connection is needed throughout the match, as in the other games.

Do the statistics change by language?

No: there is one set of counts for all languages. If someone answers “Mar Nero” in Italian and someone else “Black Sea” in English, they count as the same answer.

Do I lose points if I can’t answer?

No. Passing or letting the time run out is worth 0 points for that question, but it doesn’t take away what you already have. Even the penalty for the most popular answer never takes a question’s score below zero.

Is there a world leaderboard?

No, and none is planned. The statistics are only there to give answers a value: you play to have fun with the people at your table, not to compete with the rest of the world.
